BELOW ARE A FEW GRANT OPPORTUNITIES THAT MIGHT BE OF INTEREST |
|
| |
1) The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Forward Promise Innovation Grants are open.. The competition funds innovative projects that advance the health and success of young men of color. 10 grants with an award ceiling of $500,000 each are available. Grant proposals should show how programs that target middle- and high-school aged boys and young men of color will have demonstrated evidence of successful outcomes in line with the Foundation’s four areas of concern: “alternative approaches to harsh school discipline that do not push students out of school; solutions that focus on dropout prevention and increasing middle school retention and high school graduation rates; mental health interventions that tailor approaches to boys and young men who have experienced and/or been exposed to violence and trauma; and career training programs that blend workforce and education emphases to ensure that students are college- and career-ready.” Proposals are due October 10, 2012. Good candidates: Public entities and non-profit organizations within the United States and its territories. Applying organizations must have an annual operating budget of at least $1.5 million.

2) The Burroughs Wellcome Fund provides Career Grants for Medical Scientists.. These grants seek to support physician researchers as they leave mentored positions and become independent researchers. Applications must put forward proposals in the area of “basic biomedical, disease-oriented, or translational research. Proposals in health services research or involving large-scale clinical trials are ineligible.” $700,000 will be awarded to each recipient to fund five years of their careers as they transition from postdoctoral research to faculty positions. The application closing date is October 1, 2012. An online eligibility quiz is available to help potential applicants determine whether they may be a good fit for the grant. Good candidates: Degree granting organizations in the U.S. or Canada will submit an application on behalf on an individual prospective awardee.

3) Although not a grant, we bring your attention to the Continuing Resolution (CR) recently approved by both Houses of Congress. The CR allows the federal government to continue spending at levels similar to those for the last fiscal year (with only minor adjustment) without the passage of new appropriations legislation; this bill carries funding decisions through until March 2013, when another CR or new appropriations legislation would need to be passed. Under this CR, most discretionary programs will receive an across the board increase of .612% on October 1, 2012 when the CR would take effect, although some programs, like Wildland Fire Management, will receive an increase of funds above the .612% raise. Now federal agencies have 30 days to send their allocations decisions to Congress.
In addition to wild fire management, you may note the following budget decisions: FEMA will receive $6.4 billion to address natural disasters such as damage from Hurricane Isaac. The Veterans Benefit Administration will see an increase in spending on disability claims of $145 million. Refugee and entrant assistance will increase by $132 million, and $99 billion of emergency assistance funds will go toward war-related expenses. One additional area of interest for readers is that the Small Business Administration will see an increase in spending from $207 million to $334 million.

Purse strings are tightening and budgets will be cut, but the federal government will continue to spend billions of dollars. A lot of these funds will be accessed by those who have experienced help in seeking grants, contracts and program funds!
