1) The Institute of Library and Museum Services is now accepting applications for the Laura Bush 21st Century Librarian Program. The grant program supports libraries and other organizations that educate professionals in the provision of open access information systems and sources. Applicants may apply for grants in the following categories: doctoral programs, master’s programs, early career development, institutional development programming, and continuing education programming. Grants of up to $500,000 are available. The application deadline is September 6, 2013. Good candidates: Units of state and local government and non-profit organizations that are also libraries, members of library consortiums or associations, or academic units. 2) Lexus and Scholastic are partnering on the Seventh Annual Environmental Contest for Middle and High School Students. The program invites teams of students in grades 6-12 and their teacher-advisor to compete in challenges addressing two different areas: land/water and air/climate. “For each of the challenges, teams define an environmental issue that is important to them, develop an action plan to address the issue, implement the plan, and report the results. The submission deadline for Challenge 1 (land/water) is October 7, 2013; the deadline for Challenge 2 (air/climate) is November 11, 2013.” $500,00 in total grant and scholarship funding is available. As noted above, the first step of the submission deadline is October 7, 2013; registration begins September 2, 2013. Good candidates: legal residents of the U.S. that are registered at an accredited high school or middle school (or home schooled), participating in a school club such as an after-school science or environmental club. 3) The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is advertising a funding opportunity for Training and Technical Assistance to Improve Water Quality and Enable Small Public Water Systems to Provide Safe Drinking Water. This EPA grant facilitates the training and technical assistance required to maintain compliance with the Safe Water Drinking Act; in addition, this funding can be used “to provide training and technical assistance for small publicly-owned wastewater systems, communities served by onsite/decentralized wastewater systems, and private well owners to improve water quality under the Clean Water Act.” For this grant, “small” refers to systems that serve 10,000 or fewer persons. Up to $12.7 million is available to approximately four to nine cooperative applicants, with a funding ceiling as high as $8.5 million. The deadline is September 16, 2013. 4) The American Hiking Society’s (AHS) National Trails Fund accepts applications for grants that build and protect hiking trails across the nation—including providing applicants with volunteers, resources, and tools to do so. Several different kinds of projects are welcome, including: “projects that secure trail lands, including acquisition of trails and trail corridors and the costs associated with acquiring conservation easements; projects that will result in visible and substantial ease of access, improved hiker safety, and/or avoidance of environmental damage; and projects that promote constituency-building surrounding specific trail projects, including volunteer recruitment and support also are eligible. Preference often is given to projects that utilize volunteer labor.” Awards range from $500 to $5,000 for each successful project applicant. The deadline is December 17, 2013. Purse strings are tightening and budgets will be cut, but the federal government will continue to spend billions of dollars. A lot of these funds will be accessed by those who have experienced help in seeking grants, contracts and program funds!
