This initiative promotes research and development for projects that foster sustainable fisheries along the Gulf of Mexico and the Southern shoreline from Florida to North Carolina. Proposals should address any number of commercial and recreational fishing industry efforts, including "fishery biology, resource assessment, socioeconomic assessment, management and conservation, selected harvesting methods, and fish handling and processing." Proposals that address any of the following priorities will be most successful: bycatch; reef fish support and protection of reef environments; red snapper support; economic and sociocultural studies of fishing industry; and integrated ecosystem assessment. $2 million is available, with award ceilings up to $175,000. The application closing date is August 9, 2012. Individual award ceilings are at $3.4 million. Proposals should highlight prevention efforts to address "individual, relationship and community level risk and protective factors, by building capacity for implementation and evaluation and by building and sustaining partnerships for prevention." Note that there are five different tiers of financial support and that each is associated with different recipient activities. The application closing date is August 17, 2012. Good candidates: Departments of Health or their Bona Fide Agents in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, the Commonwealth of the Northern Marianna Islands, American Samoa, Guam, the Federated States of Micronesia, the Republic of the Marshall Islands, and the Republic of Palau.
