BELOW ARE A FEW GRANT OPPORTUNITIES THAT MIGHT BE OF INTEREST

1) The Dollar General Literacy Foundation is collaborating with the Barbara Bush Foundation to sponsor the Adult Literacy XPRIZE competition. Teams will compete to develop an app that builds literacy among native and non-native English speakers across the United States. Successful smartphone and tablet applications will “address the complexities of the adult learner’s life and reality - tackling the largest obstacles to achieving basic literacy by improving access, encouraging persistence, developing relevant learning content, and scaling nationwide.” $6 million will be awarded to the top teams; the city that best promotes the use of the apps will receive $1 million. The team registration deadline is December 8, 2015 (six months after launch of the competition). Good candidates: Teams may be comprised of software developers, educators, engineers, and anyone else that may bring innovation to the project. For more information, click HERE.

2) The Starwood Hotels Foundation funds a number of Starwood Community Initiatives. Their Workforce Readiness Grant provides grants to organizations that do one of three things: foster employment (offering skills and job readiness training); offer career development (provide continuing education opportunities for those looking to move further in their chosen career path); and develop employer readiness (help companies to identify workforce needs and to hire locally). Necessary skills training may range from the development of social skills, literacy skills, to specific job training skills, for example. Another program offering Community Vitality Grants works with organizations to “preserve the social, economic, and cultural value of communities to ensure their long-term viability.” In addition to these initiatives, the foundation supports environmental conservation projects, disaster relief, and human rights advocacy campaigns. Award sums will vary and applications are accepted on a rolling basis. Good candidates: 501(c)(3) non-profit organizations and their international equivalents. For more information, click HERE.

3) The Corporation for National and Community Service recently launched the National Service and Civic Engagement Research Competition. The grants will help university researchers learn more about service and volunteer work, and develop evidence on successful programming. Activities to be funded may include: all stages of research, from planning to data collection and analysis; dissemination of research findings; and collaborations with practitioners and policymakers to implement research recommendations. Graduate students may apply for the dissertation research category and established scholars may apply to the scholar category. Up to $800,000 in total funding is available. The application deadline is July 16, 2015. Good candidates: Higher education institutions. For more information, click HERE.
