BELOW ARE A FEW GRANT OPPORTUNITIES THAT MIGHT BE OF INTEREST |
|
| |
1) The U.S. Department of Interior's (DOI) Fish and Wildlife Service is offering competitive grants for its Boating Infrastructure Program. Applicants can use the funds for the "development and maintenance of boating infrastructure facilities for transient [staying in one location for ten or fewer days], nontrailerable recreational vessels. Nontrailerable recreational vessels are defined as recreational vessels at least 26 feet long operated primarily for pleasure." Eligible projects include funding for buoys, safe harbors, floating docks, showers and restrooms, marine fueling stations, dredging, and many others. $11 million is available, spread across 20 successful applicants with an award ceiling of $1.5 million. The application closing date is September 19, 2012, but applicants are encouraged to apply as early as possible in order to receive and incorporate any suggestions from the review committee. Good candidates: Governor designated state agencies across the U.S., including Puerto Rico, Guam, the U.S. Virgin Islands, American Samoa, the Northern Mariana Islands, and Washington D.C.

2) The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) announced that Innovative Transit Workforce Development Program grants are now open. $5 million in total has been authorized and awards may range from $100,000 to $1 million. This grant will fund applicants that propose innovative solutions to common transit workforce development issues. Special attention will be paid to proposals that 1) "demonstrate innovative methods of leveraging investments in public transportation infrastructure to generate possible impacts in local employment, particularly in underserved communities;" 2) "support the training/professional development needs of blue-collar workers, particularly in the area of new and emerging technologies;" and 3) "showcase innovative methods of encouraging youth to pursue careers in public transportation." The application closing date is July 6, 2012. Good candidates: Public transit agencies, state departments of transportation, Native American tribes, non-profit organizations and institutions of higher education.

3) The DOT is also offering grants for the Off Hours Freight Delivery Pilot Program. The program builds from research that shows that moving some freight traffic to off peak transportation hours has many benefits that include less road congestion, improved efficiency and air quality, and fewer human and energy resources, which supports the sustainability and livability of our communities. Awarded funds can be used to develop alternative routes, modify businesses to accommodate off hours delivery, deploy marketing and education programs to support the efforts of this pilot program, conduct program evaluation, and other activities. This pilot program will distribute grants to three successful applicants and offers an award ceiling of $450,000. The application closing date is July 13, 2012. Good candidates: All public agencies are eligible, including state, local, and tribal governments, port authorities, metropolitan planning organizations, other political subdivisions of state or local governments, and multi-state or multi-jurisdictional groups applying through a single lead applicant.

Purse strings are tightening and budgets will be cut, but the federal government will continue to spend billions of dollars. A lot of these funds will be accessed by those who have experienced help in seeking grants, contracts and program funds!
