BELOW ARE A FEW GRANT OPPORTUNITIES THAT MIGHT BE OF INTEREST

1) The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) opened its Assistance to Firefighters Grant, a grant that also funds emergency medical services (EMS). Grants can fund vehicle acquisition of fire trucks and EMS vehicles, as well as departmental and multi-departmental regional operations and safety projects (trainings, equipment, modifications to facilities, personnel fitness and wellbeing, etc.). $285 million is available to successful applicants. Webinars and regional workshops will be held to answer questions and offer application guidance. The application closing date is July 6, 2012. Good candidates: Career and volunteer fire departments as well as nonaffiliated EMS providers. Detailed information on funding priorities is also included in the application guidelines linked online. For more information, CLICK HERE.

2) The Federal Prevention and Public Health Fund of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) authorized $70 million for two-year project support via Community Transformation Grants. The purpose of Community Transformation Grants is to support "intensive community approaches to reduce risk factors responsible for the leading chronic disease-related causes of death and disability including tobacco use, poor nutrition and physical inactivity, and to prevent and control chronic diseases in communities across the nation." The grant aims to reach all populations—both populations in large, metropolitan areas and underserved communities with populations of 500,000 or smaller, including those in rural or frontier regions. The application closing date is July 31, 2012, but letters of intent to apply are due June 18. Good candidates: State and local government agencies, Native American tribes and territories, and state and local non-profit organizations. For more information, CLICK HERE.

3) A new round of grants for the Consumer Assistance Program (CAP) has just been opened. The program is part of the Affordable Care Act and serves the purpose of aiding consumers to get and keep health care coverage. Funds can be employed to help consumers find appropriate health plans, file complaints against health plans or insurance companies, learn about their consumer rights and responsibilities, and take appropriate and effective action to protect their health coverage. Agencies and organizations that receive funding will also collect information regarding consumer inquiries and complaints in order to record changes among health plan providers and to better serve consumers. This round of CAP will distribute nearly $30 million to 56 awardees. Information about past award recipients can be found at the link below. The application closing date is July 9, 2012. Good candidates: State agencies or local non-profit organizations contracted by a state agency. For more information, CLICK HERE.

Purse strings are tightening and budgets will be cut, but the federal government will continue to spend billions of dollars. A lot of these funds will be accessed by those who have experienced help in seeking grants, contracts and program funds!
