BELOW ARE A FEW GRANT OPPORTUNITIES THAT MIGHT BE OF INTEREST...

1) The Department of Education (DOE) opened its Promise Neighborhoods Competition for 2012. $60 million is available for grants to plan and implement programs that will make communities stronger through education, health, and safet¬y services. Two types of grants are offered: planning grants (1 year award) and implementation grants (3-5 year award). Planning grants enable "organizations to complete a needs assessment and segmentation analysis, and create a comprehensive neighborhood plan with the local partnerships and data systems necessary for implementation to be successful"; implementation grants offer funds to "develop the administrative capacity necessary to successfully implement a continuum of solutions, such as managing partnerships, integrating multiple funding sources, and supporting the data system." Successful applicants will propose comprehensive community strategies that will improve the lives of citizens from high need communities from via cradle-to-career efforts, mobilizing effective partnerships. Notice of intent to apply must be submitted by June 8, 2012; the full application must be submitted by July 27, 2012. Good candidates: Nonprofit organizations, institutions of higher education, and Native American tribal organizations. For more information, CLICK HERE.

2) The National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) invites applications for their Art Works Grant. The Art Works Program supports innovative art that produces “public engagement with diverse and excellent art, lifelong learning in the arts, and the strengthening of communities through the arts.” Grant awards will range from $10,000 to $100,000 and will address two specific areas of the Art Works mission and outcomes: “creation” and “engagement.” Projects that have creation-focused outcomes may develop television or radio programs, webisodes, videogames or other media. Projects that highlight engagement outcomes emphasize innovative efforts at the distribution of art or preservation, restoration, and/or archiving of art. The application closing date is August 9, 2012. Good candidates: Nonprofit organizations; units of state or local government; or federally recognized tribal communities or tribes may apply. Applicants may be arts organizations, local arts agencies, arts service organizations, or local education agencies (school districts). For more information, CLICK HERE.

3) The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is accepting applications for Basic Center Program grants. Up to $200,000 is available to each successful applicant in order to support homeless and runaway youth and their families. Funds will aid community-based programs that house, feed, clothe, and provide youth (children 18 years and younger) with counseling and mental and physical health referrals; typically, such programs will offer short term shelter of up to 21 days while establishing effective service interventions, “facilitating healing and recovery and promoting the social and emotional well-being of children, youth and families who have experienced maltreatment, exposure to violence, and/or trauma.” The application closing date is July 8, 2012. Good candidates: State and local governments, public and private institutions of higher learning, public housing authorities, Native American tribal organizations, and nonprofit organizations. Purse strings are tightening and budgets will be cut, but the federal government will continue to spend billions of dollars. A lot of these funds will be accessed by those who have experienced help in seeking grants, contracts and program funds!
