1) The Agricultural Marketing Service of the USDA has Local Food Promotion Program grants available. The Local Food Promotion Program connects consumers with more opportunities to buy food that is grown locally or regionally; it also builds market opportunities for farmers and agricultural networks. Applicants can apply for planning grants (e.g., market research, feasibility studies, business planning) or implementation grants (e.g., training, technical assistance, marketing and outreach). The program allocated $13 million with an award ceiling of $100,000. The application deadline is May 14, 2015. Good candidates: Agricultural cooperatives and community supported agriculture networks, food producer networks and associations, local and tribal governments, farmers market authorities, and other non-profit organizations. 2) The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) funds a Health Careers Opportunity Program (HCOP). $11 million in total program funding is available to provide “individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds an opportunity to develop the skills needed to successfully compete for, enter, and graduate from health or allied health professions schools.” Funding preferences will be given to those that utilize a partnership model, involving schools and public or non-profit health and education providers. The application deadline is May 15, 2015. Good candidates: Public and private higher education institutions, including schools of medicine, public health, dentistry, veterinary medicine, optometry, pharmacy, behavioral and mental health, physician assistant training (excludes nursing programs) and tribal colleges. For more information, click HERE.
3) The Agricultural Marketing Service of the USDA is accepting applications for Farmers Market Promotion Program grants, which aim to “increase domestic consumption of and access to locally and regionally produced agricultural products and to develop new market opportunities for farm and ranch operations serving local markets.” Funding initiatives could include expanding or improving existing markets, CSAs, and roadside stands, creating new markets, developing agritourism activities, and other producer-to-consumer actions. The program has $13 million in total funding. The application deadline is May 14, 2015. No specific funding amount has been given at this time. Good candidates: Agricultural cooperatives and community supported agriculture networks, food producer networks and associations, local and tribal governments, farmers market authorities, and other non-profit organizations.
