BELOW ARE A FEW GRANT OPPORTUNITIES THAT MIGHT BE OF INTEREST

1) The Department of Commerce’s (DOC) Economic Development Administration (EDA) is funding a Make It in America Challenge that will reward up to $40 million to projects that develop innovative state, regional, and local economic development strategies. 15 projects will be funded with an award ceiling of up to $4 million per project. The aim of the challenge is to “provide the critical infrastructure, strategic planning, capacity building, technical assistance, and workforce skills training necessary for American communities to be the desired home for more businesses.” Projects should focus on insourcing production, increasing foreign investment in the U.S., and expanding U.S. businesses and jobs. The application deadline is May 31, 2013. Good candidates: This is a multi-agency award and agencies vary in their eligibility requirements. For more information, CLICK HERE.

2) The Department of Labor (DOL) is accepting applications for Training to Work grants. Grants will fund pre-release services, including employment services, job training, and education for job-related credentials so that adult ex-offenders will be more successfully integrated into the workforce. The announcement stipulates that grantees “must provide: 1) job training that leads to industry-recognized credentials for in demand industries; 2) employment preparation that helps participants get a job including mentoring; and 3) assistance connecting to supportive services. In addition, grantees must collaborate with state and/or local work-release programs, American Job Centers… or local workforce investment boards (WIBs), housing programs, mental health treatment centers, and substance abuse treatment services.” $20 million is available to be shared across 15 awards. The application deadline is May 2, 2013.  Good candidates: Non-profit organizations in areas with high poverty and high crime rates; organizations working in regions with high ex-offender recidivism rates are encouraged to apply. For more information, CLICK HERE.

3) The Department of Justice’s (DOJ) Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) will fund an organization to provide technical assistance and training via the Smart Policing Initiative (SPI). While the Smart Policing Initiative offers additional funding to police jurisdictions to improve policing strategies, this award will fund a single organization to operate nationally to interface with jurisdictions that have secured SPI grants. The successful applicant will provide onsite and remote education on policing theory, training strategies, technical assistance, problem resolution and other services to improve the efficacy and efficiency of the nation’s policing forces. The organization will be awarded $750,000 to carry out these activities. The deadline for applications is May 2, 2013. Good candidates: National, regional, state, and local public and private organizations, Native American tribal governments and organizations, for-profit and non-profit organizations, faith and community-based organizations, and institutions of higher education.
