1) The Choice Neighborhoods Implementation Grant Notice of Funds Availability has been released. $110 million is available to projects that revitalize distressed public or HUD-assisted multifamily living units into “a viable, mixed-income community.” These grants are strictly for communities that have undergone a comprehensive local planning process and are ready to implement their Transformation Plan to redevelop the neighborhood. Good candidates: public housing authorities (PHAs), local governments, nonprofits, tribal entities and for-profit developers that apply jointly with a public entity.

2) In addition to the Implementation Grant mentioned above, The Choice Neighborhoods Planning Grants Notice of Funds Availability has also been released. $5 million will be awarded to revitalize distressed public or HUD-assisted multifamily units while assisting communities “in developing a successful neighborhood transformation plan and building support necessary for that plan to be successfully implemented.” The application closing date is May 1, 2012. Good candidates: public housing authorities (PHAs), local governments, nonprofits, tribal entities and for-profit developers that apply jointly with a public entity.

3) The U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) is now accepting grant applications for Training and Service Learning for Young Adult Ex-Offenders. Awards support job training and community service learning for young adults aged 18-21 that have been involved with the juvenile justice system from age 14 or older. Programs will improve employability, will better integrate the offender into his or her local community, and will reduce recidivism; as such, applications must address six components of the initiative: provide meaningful service learning opportunities; provide educational interventions that enhance employability; generate community awareness of the value of the youth; offer high staff to participant ratios; offers career development; and provide post-program support and follow up. While $30 million is available to more than 20 applicants, there is an award ceiling of $1.5 million per application. The application closing date is April 17, 2012. Good candidates: Any non-profit organization, unit of state or local government, or any Indian and Native American entity eligible for grants under WIA Section 166 may apply.

4) The Department of Transportation’s (DOT) Federal Transit Authority (FTA) is offering funding in support of Bus and Bus Facilities Livability Initiatives. Applicants should propose programs that include efforts to replace, rehabilitate or buy buses, facilities and related equipment. The FTA has $125 million available in total to improve livability through a variety of bus-related initiatives. The application closing date is rapidly approaching: March 29, 2012. Good candidates: The FTA specifies that, “Direct Recipients under the Section 5307 Urbanized Area Formula program, States, and Indian Tribes” are eligible as well as non-urban proposals that are part of a consolidated state proposal. Eligible subrecipients may also apply, including public agencies, private non-profit organizations, and private providers engaged in public transportation.

Purse strings are tightening and budgets will be cut, but the federal government will continue to spend billions of dollars. A lot of these funds will be accessed by those who have experienced help in seeking grants, contracts and program funds!
