Fire Prevention and Safety grants (FP&S) can be applied to “Activities designed to reach high-risk target groups and mitigate the incidence of death and injuries caused by fire and fire-related hazards.” In addition, applications for research and development (R&D) related activities will be accepted, including “Projects aimed at improving firefighter safety, health, and wellness through research and development that reduces firefighter fatalities and injuries.” $32 million is available to both kinds of activities through the Assistance to Firefighters Grants Program. The application deadline is March 21, 2014. Good candidates for FP&S grants: Fire departments; national, regional and state organizations; Native American tribal organizations; community organizations and non-profit organizations with fire prevention expertise. 2) The Department of Justice (DOJ)’s Bureau of Justice Assistance is accepting applications for the John. R. Justice Program (JRJ). Governor-designated agencies will administer the program with the aim of providing grants to federal public defenders and state and local prosecutors to defray the cost of a law school education through loan repayment help. The program encourages law school graduates to enter the field of public interest law and facilitates recruitment and retention in that field. The award ceiling for successful applicant agencies is $60,000 and the application deadline is April 14, 2014. Good candidates: Agencies designated by state and territory governors to administer the grant and Bureau of Justice Assistance funds. For more information, click HERE.
3) The National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) opened a call for its Higher Education Challenge Grants Program. The Program was created to challenge universities to create educational degrees that focus on “strengthening the Nation’s food and agricultural scientific and professional workforce.” Educational programs of interest include: agriculture, natural resources, forestry, veterinary sciences, family and consumer sciences and “disciplines closely allied to the food and agricultural system [including] rural economic, community and business development.” Successful applicants will show how they are improving the quality of education in the above fields as well as how they are increasing the numbers and diversity of students entering such educational fields. More than $4.7 million is available through this program and individual applicants may be granted up to $750,000 in funding. Applications are due April 10, 2014. Good candidates: Public, state, and private higher education institutions. For more information, click HERE.
4) The Department of Labor’s (DOL) Employment and Training Administration offers YouthBuild awards to provide alternative education programs to youth aged 16 to 24 that have dropped out of high school, found themselves in the criminal justice system, aged out of foster care, or belong to other underserved populations with special needs. YouthBuild both provides academic preparation to achieve high school graduation or its equivalent through exam and occupational training for career placement. $73 million will be distributed among successful applicants with a funding ceiling $1.1 million. Applications are due April 22, 2014. Good candidates: Non-profit organizations that have previously worked with underserved youth through a YouthBuild or similar program.
