2) The Department of Transportation's (DOT) Federal Transit Authority (FTA) is offering funding in support of Bus and Bus Facilities Livability Initiatives. Applicants should propose programs that offer "expanded transportation choices, new and better intermodal connections, reduced congestion, and/or services aimed at economically disadvantaged populations, including senior citizens and people with disabilities." Funded projects may include efforts to replace, rehabilitate or buy buses, facilities and related equipment. The FTA has $125 million available in total to improve livability through a variety of bus-related initiatives. The application closing date is March 29, 2012.
Good candidates: The FTA specifies that, "Direct Recipients under the Section 5307 Urbanized Area Formula program, States, and Indian Tribes" are eligible as well as non-urban proposals that are part of a consolidated state proposal. For more information, CLICK HERE.

3) ChildObesity180 and the Partnership for a Healthier America are collaborating to launch a competition to Identify and Support School Programs and Technology Innovations that Motivate Children to be Physically Active. Applicants may apply either for the school-based program competition or the technology innovation competition. The school programs competition offers ten $25,000 awards to regional schools and two $100,000 awards to national schools; successful programs may be "any curriculum, activity, environmental modification, event, or other initiative that promotes quality school-time physical activity among the target population" of 5-12 year olds. The technology innovation award supports "newly developed technologies and unique applications of existing technologies, that can motivate kids to get at least sixty minutes of moderate to vigorous activity every day." This competition allocates $50,000 each to two schools. The application deadline is April 2, 2012. Good candidates include applicants from public, private, charter and parochial schools running programs aimed at children aged 5-12. For the school-based programs competition, applicants must apply for programs that have already been implemented rather than those in the proposal stage. For more information, CLICK HERE.

Purse strings are tightening and budgets will be cut, but the federal government will continue to spend billions of dollars. A lot of these funds will be accessed by those who have experienced help in seeking grants, contracts and program funds!
