BELOW ARE A FEW GRANT OPPORTUNITIES THAT MIGHT BE OF INTEREST

1) The Department of Justice (DOJ) rewards innovative and effective, evidence-based policing with its Smart Policing Initiative (SPI) grants. Law enforcement agencies and a selected research partner should first propose a concept paper that outlines the problem as well as the proposed solution to promote smarter policing of crime in a more cost-effective, efficient way. Applicants must first submit concept papers; select applicants will then be invited to submit full applications. The award ceiling is $700,000 for each jurisdiction that submits a successful application. The deadline for submitting concept papers is February 14, 2013. Good candidates: State, local, and Native American tribal law enforcement agencies or a government agency acting as a fiscal agent for the applicant. For more information, including examples of past winners, CLICK HERE.

2) The Department of Health and Human Services’ (HHS) Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) is accepting applications for New Access Point Grants. The New Access Point grant program enables organizations to set up and support local health centers for underserved populations. In 2011, the Health Center Program supported by New Access Point grants served more than 20 million underserved and underinsured patients, providing “comprehensive, culturally competent, quality primary health care services.” The program will make 25 awards with a funding ceiling of up to $650,000. The application deadline is February 27, 2013.  Good candidates: City, county, and township governments, Native American tribal organizations, and non-profits (excluding institutions of higher education). For more information, CLICK HERE.

3) The Department of Health and Human Services’ (HHS) Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) is also accepting applications for the Small Rural Hospital Improvement Program (SHIP). Small hospitals in rural settings are those that have 49 or fewer beds. Applicants should submit proposals that address any of the following need areas in compliance with the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA): 1. Requests that enable the purchase of equipment or training, 2. Requests that “aid small rural hospitals in joining or becoming accountable care organizations, or create shared savings programs,” or 3. Requests that allow “small rural hospitals to purchase health information technology, equipment and/or training to comply with meaningful use, ICD-10 standards, and payment bundling.” 47 grants of $9,000 each will be awarded ($15 million in total funding is available). The application deadline is March 15, 2013. Good candidates: State governments; the State Office of Rural Health will serve as the fiscal intermediary and grantee of record.
