VOTERS SUPPORT TRANSPORTATION INITIATIVES
Voters have shown overwhelming support for a number of transportation related propositions across the country; they have elected to increase sales tax, property tax and vehicle registration fees to fund transportation projects. In fact, according to the American Public Transportation Association, “At a rate of 73 percent, voters across the country in 14 states approved 22 measures out of 30 state and local public transportation-related ballot initiatives, authorizing nearly $500 million over the next five years.”
Election results across the country include property tax increases in Wheeling, West Virginia to support the Ohio Valley Regional Transportation Authority and in Ingham Country, Michigan to improve transportation services for disabled and elderly passengers. Voters have also supported the expansion of public transit authorities, bus and garage rehabilitations and expanded public transport service areas. Jason Jordan, Executive Director for the Center for Transportation Excellence, explains, “Despite the economy and conventional political wisdom about opposition to taxes, voters acknowledged that thoughtful, targeted investments in their communities are vital to restoring and sustaining prosperity.”
While voters have shown investment in the expansion of transportation measures, Congress remains tied up during this election season. Congressional leaders return to Washington to begin the lame duck session on November 15 and will address concerns such as extending the short-term continuing resolution that would allow programs like the federal transit program to continue without funding interruption. In a less likely scenario, Congress could also pass appropriations bills to secure transportation funding for another year. |
