House Bridge Bill

The House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee reported out a $ 2 Billion Bridge Repair/Maintenance bill last week. Less than the original proposition of $25 Billion suggested in the wake of the Minneapolis bridge collapse, the bill calls for spending $1 Billion/year over the next two years. Funds will come from the General Fund, an unusual transportation funding strategy.The bill requires the DOT to work with the National Academy of Sciences to develop a "risk-based prioritization" of deficient bridges. Bridge earmarks are not permitted. 

We wish Chairman Oberstar well as he recuperates from Monday's neck surgery to correct a problem from a bicycle injury 20 years ago. He will be recuperating for approximately one week.

Congress Prepared to Override WRDA Veto

The House is scheduled to vote to override the President's veto of the Water Resources Development Act today. Last Friday, the President vetoed the $23 Billion bill which set off a national letter-writing campaign to Members of Congress urging passage of these significant projects. The Senate is scheduled to vote on the bill on the 7th. Leaders are confident this will be the first veto over-ride of this Congress as both houses passed the bill by large, veto-proof majorities.
