Funding Bridges 

The Senate Environment and Public Works Committee will look at maintenance of the nation's bridges on Thursday. This hearing comes after the full Senate added $ 1 Billion to the fy'08 Transportation Appropriations bill last week.  House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee Chair Oberstar has proposed a temporary nickel increase in the 18.3 cents/gallon gas tax to finance what's needed to repair the nation's bridges. The Administration and Congressional Republicans oppose this tactic. Oberstar staff reports they will then craft another funding mechanism as bridge repair and maintenance is a top priority for them!
