Aviation and Public Transportation Action This Week

Yesterday, the Senate passed an extension of the taxes that support the Airport and Airway Trust Funds through the end of the federal fiscal year or September 30, 2008. Set to expire at the end of this month, taxes and the ability to spend from the funds will continue for the next three months. The President is expected to sign the bill because it no longer contains a controversial fix for the Highway Trust Fund as did an earlier version. The House passed the "Saving Energy through Public Transportation Act" which provides a total of $850 M for the next two years to expand public transit service while helping those transit authorities cope with the rising cost of fuel.
