Transportation Gets A Spending Boost

Today, House Appropriations Chair Obey announced the discretionary spending allocations for each of the 13 fy' 08 appropriations bills working their way through subcommittees. Transportation and HUD spending are included in one bill whose current spending level is at $ 47.5 Billion this year. The Administration has proposed $ 47.9 Billion while the Obey announcement permits House members to take it up to $ 50.7 Billion!

Transportation Security Dollars Falling From Everywhere!

On May 24th, House and Senate conferees approved a bill that contains $100 Million in additional funds for rail, public transit and freight security grants taking the 2007 total up to $ 275 Million. A separate, multi-year bill addressing the 9/11 Commission's recommendations contains $ 3.5 billion for transit security and $ 1.2 Billion for rail security over 3 years. And finally, the House Subcommittee on Homeland Security Appropriations has approved a fy' 08 bill with $400 Million for public transit and freight rail security! Support for increased transportation security is clearly growing on Capitol Hill.
